Our Kundalini Yoga Chapter called 'Venus - Love, Beauty, and Fertility' was based the story of the birth of Venus which was reenacted by the team at Centre for Life.
Venus is the Roman Goddess, while Aphrodite is the Greek Goddess of desire, love, sexual attraction, beauty, and fertility. Since antiquity, she has been identified as the planet Venus and the morning and evening star. She is described as moving radiant light that beauty accompanies.
Arising from the sea, Venus is often depicted with seashells and dolphins and viewed as a protector of sailors. Her association with water relates to her roots in potency and fertility. As the video portrays, Venus's birth was from the severed genitals of Uranus that landed in the sea after his son, Cronus, emasculated him at the request of his mother, Gaea.
This story of her birth, which is attributed to Hesiod (c. 700 BC. Greek poet), makes the legend of Venus older than, and somewhat separate from, the Olympian pantheon that was lead by Zeus.
Venus is often thought of with reverence and often her qualities are sought after. This is particular apparent in our Western culture. But can something so beautiful, attractive and wholesome come from such a violent conception? Does she really embody characteristics that we should strive for?
The study of this myth offers us the opportunity to identify the 'Venus energy' within ourselves and redefine our ideas of love, attraction, beauty, and fertility.
The 6-week Chapter called 'Venus - Love, Beauty, and Fertility' began at Centre for Life on Saturday 7th May, 2016.
